The CAPA Summer Movies Series is back for its 47th year! This is also the best time to hear the Mighty Morton during the year. The
organ is played 30 minutes before the featured movie, at intermission
and for a few minutes after
the movie ends. For $5.00 you get to hear
about 45 minutes of organ music and a
good flick all
while relaxing in the friendly
confines of the beautiful Ohio Theatre. Click here to see a
few photos from a couple movies several years ago. The
primary organist for the Summer Movie Series is current Resident
Organist Clark Wilson. Known as "The Master of the Manuals" for good
reason, Wilson is in his 26th year as the theatre's house organist.
Local organist David Fleischer fills in for Clark at selected movie
The series highlight is the silent film where you can hear the Morton
in its element. This year the silent film is "The Freshman" and will run
on July 20th and 21st at 7:30 p.m. Clark Wilson will provide the
soundtrack for the film. After seeing a silent film accompanied by the
Morton you'll realize that silent films weren't actually silent! While at the theater, be sure to check out the banner in the lobby of
the Morton organ (see photo above). Thanks to assistant organist David
Fleischer for spearheading the project!
"A Christmas Carol"
year Thanksgiving weekend CAPA hosts a live theater performance of
Charles Dickens' classic "A Christmas Carol". During intermission of
the performances, Clark Wilson performs holiday tunes on the Mighty
Morton organ. This is the best time to hear the organ played with a more classical sound.
Ohio Theatre Tours
during the summer and occasionally during other times of the year, CAPA
will host free tours of the Ohio Theatre. Included is a guided tour of
the facility, a light show, and a demonstration of the Morton Organ.
Check out the CAPA
web page for information.
theater is host to many events each year, most public, some
private. Click here
to see the entire list of CAPA events. Change the venue to Ohio Theatre
to see what is going on only at that location. If you are invited to a
private event and get to hear the organ consider yourself lucky!
Occasionally the organ will accompany the Columbus Symphony
in one of their performances. In March 2007 the symphony teamed up with
former Ohio Theatre Resident Organist Dennis James for a silent film
performance of "Phantom of the Opera". Then in February 2008 the
Symphony played Saint Saens "Organ Symphony". The last half of the
third movement offered the listener the rare opportunity to hear the
organ played in the classical style. In spite of it's ability to
completely fill the theater with sound, the organ blended very well
with the symphony.
syndicated program "Pipedreams" aired a program promoting
organs in Ohio in reference to the American Theater Organ Society
and Organ Historical
Society 2009 conventions in Cleveland. Click here
for the program. The Mighty Morton leads off the program!
Kudos to "Pipedreams" host Michael Barone!
If you are unable to attend the Ohio in person, check online
for recordings of the organ. The most recent recording is Clark
Wilson's CD called Intermission.
Several records were also recorded by previous organists and
occasionally show up on Ebay.
